A group of activists attempted to “occupy” the Cannon rotunda Tuesday morning before approximately 20 people were arrested by Capitol Police.

The protesters were calling for the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

The effort to expand brand name food options in the House continues, with Au Bon Pain opening in the Cannon House Office Building next week.

The cafe, which will serve sandwiches, breads, pastries, salads, soups and coffee, will be on the first floor of Cannon in room 194. The location will be open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will employ about 16 people. The location will be under the management umbrella of Sodexo, the food service contractor for the House.

Staff and visitors were evacuated from the Cannon House Office Thursday afternoon for about 45 minutes after alarms began blaring throughout the building.

The evacuation notice went out to staff via email just before 1 p.m.

The man with the biggest portfolio on Capitol Hill will be stepping down at the end of November. Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers will be leaving his post after ascending to the top job over a 20-year career with the agency.

The architect of the Capitol oversees the upkeep and preservation of more than 17.4 million square feet of facilities and 580 acres of grounds on the Capitol campus. That includes the historic House and Senate office buildings, the Capitol itself, thousands of works of art and even the trees that dot the campus.

A wellness program for House employees is ramping up, including a search for a full-time coordinator and plans for a “wellness center” storefront in the Capitol complex. 

“Having worked on the Hill for several decades, I know how rewarding it can be, but I also know how stressful it is and how it impacts you professionally and personally,” said House Chief Administrative Officer Philip G. Kiko.
