Watch Live: Senate Hearing on U.S. ISIS Strategy

The Senate Armed Services Committee holds a hearing on the U.S. strategy to combat the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, which follows a prime-time address earlier in the week by President Barack Obama reasserting the administration's plan to defeat the terrorist group. Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Paul J. Selva are expected to testify. Coverage begins at 9:30 a.m.

Defense Bill Far From a Sure Thing in the Senate

With opposition on the left gaining momentum, the Senate will consider this week the conference report for the annual defense authorization measure.

Democrats haven’t said they’d filibuster, but the White House last week issued a veto threat , only 37 Democrats supported the measure in the House, and the Senate Armed Services Committee ranking member Jack Reed, D-R.I., refused to sign off on the conference report. The issue is the use of emergency war funding — Overseas Contingency Operations — to circumvent Budget Control Act-mandated spending caps, which Democrats write off as a “budget gimmick.”

Hours after a Senate Democrat announced his opposition to the Iran deal, two more have come out in support.

Rhode Island Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse came together Tuesday to announce that they would support the agreement. Reed, an Army veteran and West Point graduate, is the ranking member on the Armed Services Committee.

Five Joint Fundraising Committees Register at FEC

The Federal Election Commission has received five new registrations for political committees that will operate as joint fundraising committees, allowing a donor to easily write one check for a large amount. However, the check may not exceed the combined contribution limit for all the participating candidates/committees.

Registering at the FEC were Kentucky Republican Leadership Fund , which is a joint fundraising effort by the Republican National Committee and the Republican Party of Kentucky.
