The special election for former Pennsylvania Rep. Tim Murphy’s seat is kicking into gear now that each party has its candidate. Democrat Conor Lamb, a former Marine and federal prosecutor, will face Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone, a former Air Force special agent, in the March 13 election.

Murphy, a Republican, resigned his 18th District seat in the wake of a scandal that included an extramarital affair.

Speaker Paul D. Ryan said during a news conference Tuesday that the House is on track to get a tax overhaul bill over to the Senate before Thanksgiving.

Before addressing reporters Tuesday Ryan told the House GOP Conference that he’s hopeful the tax bill will be released next week.

A House Republican tax bill is expected to be released next week, marked up the following week and brought to the floor the week after that, Ohio GOP Rep. Jim Jordan said Monday night.

The former Freedom Caucus chairman said he and other members of the hard-line conservative caucus will support the Senate budget resolution that the House is expected to vote on Thursday, thanks to assurances that the tax bill will move under that accelerated timetable.

Rep. Tim Murphy made headlines this week when he announced he would be resigning Oct. 21 following revelations that the anti-abortion champion allegedly urged his mistress to have an abortion.

Amid the stories of the Pennsylvania Republican’s affair and his upcoming resignation were accounts of his being abusive to members of his staff.

Rep. Tim Murphy will resign effective Oct. 21, Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s office announced Thursday, following revelations that Murphy had urged a woman with whom he had an affair to get an abortion. 

The Pennsylvania Republican announced Wednesday that he would not run for re-election, but would serve out the rest of his term. But less than 24 hours later, Ryan’s office announced Murphy had submitted a letter of resignation.

Rep. Tim Murphy announced Wednesday that he would not seek re-election, following revelations that he urged a woman with whom he had an affair to get an abortion.

The Pennsylvania Republican said in a statement that he would not run for a ninth term in Congress. He said there was still work to be done and he would serve out the remainder of his term.

Rep. Tim Murphy, who has been praised by the anti-abortion rights movement, urged a woman with whom he had an affair to have an abortion, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.

The revelations come as the House is debating a ban on abortions after 20 weeks, which Murphy co-sponsored.  Murphy voted for the bill Tuesday evening. He is also a member of the Pro-Life Caucus.

The U.S. Navy is reviewing Pennsylvania Rep. Tim Murphy’s admission last week of having an extramarital affair.

A Navy spokesperson confirmed to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that a review is underway for Murphy, a commander the Navy Reserve.

Today is the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

As of Sunday evening, the Senate was scheduled to reconvene at 3 p.m. It will observe a moment of silence in memory of those killed in the terrorist attacks 16 years ago.
